Your Gut And What It Does For You

Hello!

Our first newsletter is addressing the GUT, and what it does for you.
Here’s one thing I would like you to know:
Once you hear about probiotics/ fermented foods, you are bound to hear about the gut/gut microbiome.
Your body’s need for Probiotics is centred around the health of your gut. That’s why there’s all this talk about the gut and gut microbiome.

So, what does it really mean?

Simply put: The Gut Microbiome refers to the microorganisms living in your intestines.

The words “microorganisms” and “bacteria” may not suggest anything exciting; so here’s where we break it down.Think of your gut microbiome as the headquarters of your body. It is responsible for the functioning (or malfunctioning) of your body. By breaking down the foods we eat and absorbing nutrients, the gut plays a vital role in your health- from energy production to hormonal balance, to skin health to mental health, and even toxin and waste elimination. It also influences the onset of chronic diseases ranging from endocrine (hormonal) disorders, to metabolic diseases to gastrointestinal disorders.

Fun Fact: 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut, and each person has about 200 different species of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in their digestive tract.

Many parts of modern life can affect our gut microbiome; especially our diet. This is why it is important to nurture your gut microbiota, which inhabits a large variety of bacteria in your gut, to help manage and reduce your risk of inflammatory health conditions including – but not limited to-

  • Diabetes
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS)
  • Skin irritations/diseases
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • etc.

It is believed that inflammation is the root of many diseases. So, in essence, Your gut is the voice that communicates what’s going on within- from your hunger grumbles to bathroom habits, to mood swings, the list goes on.

Now that you know what the gut is, and why it is necessary to nurture it, our next newsletter will address how to recognize signs of an unhealthy gut!
