Prebiotics Vs Probiotics: What You Should Know

While you hear and research on probiotics and their amazing benefits, you are likely to run into the term ‘prebiotics’.

Most people know that probiotics is a name given to the colony of microbes that we get from consuming fermented foods and beverages.

Prebiotics , on another hand, while not so often talked about , are equally important and play a vital health in your overall health. They are essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome and promoting overall well-being.

So, what are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are non-digestible high fiber foods that feed the good bacteria in your gut. Since these high fiber foods cannot be fully digested by the stomach, they pass through the stomach into the gut, serving as food for the beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. N.B: not all fibers are prebiotics.

Prebiotics also help increase the number and diversity of probiotics in the gut, which helps improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and support a strong immune system.

They can also help regulate bowel movements, prevent constipation, and reduce the risk of certain gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

They are also know to help  reduce inflammation, and enhance brain function. They may also play a role in preventing and managing conditions like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

If you’re going to remember anything at all, it’s this:

Prebiotics feed the good bacteria (probiotics.)

What are some foods that are rich in prebiotics?

Prebiotics naturally occur in foods such as whole grains, bananas, leafy greens, onions, garlic, soybeans, flax ,peas, beans.

In order to maintain a healthy gut, you need to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
