Hey!Today, we are addressing one of our most frequently asked questions: I’m pregnant; can I still drink Kombucha? |
Now, we all know Kombucha is a fermented tea that has gained popularity (and rightly so!) in recent years due to its health benefits. Since it’s a fermented beverage, it naturally contains trace amounts of alcohol due to the fermentation process. If you are pregnant, you may be wondering if it is safe to consume. In this Newsletter, we will explore the topic of whether or not you can drink Kombucha while pregnant. The main concern pregnant people may have with Kombucha is its alcohol content. While the alcohol content in Kombucha is generally low, it can vary depending on the brewing process(fermentation period and temperatures). |
Yes, some brands intentionally brew kombucha as an alcoholic beverage (by allowing it to ferment for longer periods),for a specific target market. Wholly Kombucha DOES NOT. You are still, however, going to have/taste traces of alcohol because it is a fermented beverage. |
Pregnancy is a very sensitive period in a woman’s life, as the body goes through several, (sometimes) unfamiliar changes. The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant women avoid alcohol altogether, as it can have harmful effects on the developing fetus. This is because, it’s simply best to err on the side of caution. On a personal note, I have consumed Wholly Kombucha throughout my pregnancy journeys without any issues. It actually did help a lot when I dealt with gas during pregnancy. My advice would be to consult your doctor/healthcare provider if you’re pregnant and would like to consume kombucha. |
If you are consuming kombucha while pregnant, here are some guidelines I would strictly recommend:

Another concern with Kombucha is its caffeine content. Wholly Kombucha is brewed with organic green tea and black tea, which contain caffeine. While the caffeine content in Kombucha is generally low, it can still add up if you consume multiple servings throughout the day. High levels of caffeine during pregnancy is discouraged and pregnant women are advised to limit their caffeine intake to no more than 200mg per day. It’s important to note that Kombucha is a real food source of probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health and boost the immune system. This is why it’s important to choose a reputable brand of Kombucha that has been properly fermented and stored to ensure that the probiotics are still active. |
Here at Wholly Kombucha, we are committed to bringing you kombucha in its purest, unadulterated form! So, in conclusion, while there is limited research on the effects of Kombucha on pregnancy, I would recommend that pregnant women exercise caution when consuming it. Don’t consume more than 8oz a day when pregnant. If you’re experiencing any complications in your pregnancy, it’s best to avoid it all together, and/or consult your doctor/healthcare provider. And, last but definitely not the least, choose a reputable brand like Wholly Kombucha that has been properly fermented and stored to ensure that the probiotics are still active. Like I mentioned earlier, kombucha helped resolve my gas issues during my pregnancy:). It was a great treat to have something sweet and refreshing, while also curbing gas and nausea- a pregnant woman’s dream for sure! While I do recommend and stand by this remedy, it may not work for everyone. |
